Man charged with making false report of crime

Charges have been lodged against a Hagerstown man who told police in November that he was shot in the leg in a struggle with a robber, Hagerstown City Police said Monday.

Lambert Horton, 24, of 34 N. Locust St., was charged Saturday with one count of false report of a crime, according to Lt. Gary Spielman. Horton was subsequently released from custody.

"We now believe the gunshot wound may have been self-inflicted," Spielman said Monday.

On Nov. 15, Horton told police he was sitting in his car at the rear of his home around 6:30 p.m. when a man approached and demanded money, police reports said.

As he was removing money from his wallet, Horton said the robber cocked the 9 mm handgun.

Horton said he tried to grab the weapon and it went off, wounding him in the upper left leg, police reports said.

Police responded to Washington County Hospital after being notified that a gunshot wound victim was being treated there.

After an interview with Horton, police began looking for a white man wearing a dark shirt, jeans and a knit hat. No one was found.
