MERCERSBURG, Pa. - James Buchanan girls basketball coach John Lum surveyed the stat sheet Friday and couldn't find any numbers that he liked, so he looked up at the scoreboard.

It related a 38-31 victory for the Rockets over St. Maria Goretti in the second game of the James Buchanan Tip-Off Tournament, which let Lum breathe a small sigh of relief.

"It was our first game, and you just never know in these," Lum said. "Like I told the girls, it's better to win these games than lose them, even with all that we did wrong."

Lum found a laundry list of problems, ranging from turnovers (23) to poor foul shooting (11-for-24) to no execution (13-for-42 from the field). But his team's 16-0 run to start the third quarter was enough to put the game away.

"We just don't have any intensity in the third quarter," Goretti coach John Ridge said. "In the first two games, we had big leads and sat back. Today was tight and that proved to be the difference."

Goretti (2-1) didn't help itself with a 1-for-18 effort from the field in the third period, but the game turned when JB busted Goretti's zone in the third quarter.

"I tip my hat to (Emilie Petry)," Ridge said. "She caught the ball solid in the middle and made some nice moves to the basket."

Petry had nine points in the second half, six in the deciding run. Heather Bell added 14, 10 in the first half to keep the Rockets in the game despite their errors.

"It sounds like we lost the game," Lum said. "But we didn't."
