North Hagerstown High School is sponsoring a canned good collection to provide food for the holidays for needy families in the Hagerstown area, according to student coordinator Katie Buchenroth.

"We are given so much and it is important that we give to others," said Buchenroth.

More than 75 students began collecting nonperishable canned goods Nov. 15. The drive will end Dec. 10. Each class will try gathering the most cans, she said.

On Thursday groups of students went door to door in the north end of Hagerstown passing out flyers and appealing for donations.

The school has sponsored the event for the past three years, she said. The food will be distributed to families the week of Dec. 20.

Families interested in receiving the donated canned goods should contact the Washington County Board of Education.
