Motorcyclist killed in West Virginia

November 30, 1999|By Dave McMILLION

A Martinsburg man riding a motorcycle reported stolen from Stafford, Va., was killed when he struck a utility pole at the intersection of Winchester Avenue and Berry Street early Sunday, according to the Martinsburg Police Department.

Ronald S. Gordon, 29, was pronounced dead by the Berkeley County medical examiner at the scene, police said.

Just before the crash, Gordon was inside a 7-Eleven store at King Street and Winchester Avenue and was talking about how intoxicated he was, Sgt. B.L. Yost said in a news release.

Gordon stated that he wore the wrong glasses, just came from some bars and had nearly wrecked already, Yost said.

"The driver of the motorcycle was found not to have a driver's license and was revoked for two prior DUI convictions," Yost said in the release.

When Gordon wrecked at the intersection of Winchester Avenue and Berry Street, he was thrown forward, Yost said.

Gordon failed to complete the curve in the 700 block of Winchester Avenue due to excessive speed, Yost said.

The string of events started at 3:17 a.m. when Patrolman J. Luciano drove by the 7-Eleven store and noticed an employee waving for him to stop, Yost said.

Luciano stopped at the store and the employee was trying to tell him something about a motorcycle driver in front of the store, Yost said.

The motorcycle driver looked at Luciano and rode quickly out of the parking lot, Yost said.

The motorcycle driver got about two blocks away and Luciano quickly lost sight of the man, Yost said.

An investigation revealed that when Gordon came to the 7-Eleven, he nearly lost control of the motorcycle, Yost said. Store employees tried to keep Gordon from leaving the store, Yost said.

The registration plate on the motorcycle was not proper and the motorcycle was stolen from Stafford, Yost said in the release.

Although police listed Gordon as living on Buxton Street, his obituary lists him as a resident of Falling Waters, W.Va.

Gordon was born Dec. 5, 1977, in Washington County and was the son of Ronald R. and Sue E. Welder Gordon of Falling Waters, according to his obituary.

He was a 1996 graduate of Hedgesville (W.Va.) High School.
