Hagerstown restaurant, bar fined $100 as punishment for fights

November 30, 1999

Duffy's on Potomac has been fined $100 by the Board of License Commissioners for Washington County as punishment for two fights that occurred at the Hagerstown restaurant and bar last November.

The commissioners made their decision based on findings from a Jan. 16 hearing and Hagerstown police reports, according to a letter that was drafted on Wednesday by the commissioners. The letter was sent to Mike Deming, owner of Duffy's on Potomac at 28 S. Potomac St.

"That was (the commissioners') decision," Deming said in a telephone interview Thursday afternoon. "That was the best way to handle it from their perspective. I'm not upset."

Five people were arrested the night of Nov. 21 and in the early morning hours of Nov. 22 outside Duffy's, according to Hagerstown police reports. The incidents started as verbal altercations inside the bar and turned physical when the participants left.
