Kenley Square apartment burns

November 30, 1999|By ANDREW SCHOTZ

A fire on a third-story porch at Kenley Square Apartments on Friday spread into an apartment and consumed a section of the roof, Hagerstown Fire Chief Gary Hawbaker said.

The call was dispatched at about 5 p.m. as a porch fire. However, it turned out to be more serious than it initially sounded, Hawbaker said.

Kenley Square Apartments is west of Frederick Street and south of East Wilson Boulevard.

No one was injured in the fire. Hawbaker said he didn't know if the residents of the apartment where the fire started were home at the time.

He said the fire damaged other parts of the building ? which appeared to contain about 12 apartments on three floors ? but was stopped by a fire wall.

Firefighters attacked the fiery roof from the back and front of the building. By the time the fire was knocked down, much of the roof above the apartment was missing.
