Two deputy health officers for the Washington County Health Department are handling Health Officer William Christoffel's duties while he is on administrative leave.

Health Department spokesman Rod MacRae said Thursday the two deputy health officers are Dr. Mark Jameson, director of medical services, and Earl Stoner, who handles administrative duties.

Christoffel has been on administrative leave since Friday, MacRae and Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said.

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has not said why Christoffel is on leave.

Snook said Wednesday the state is performing a review, but that it hasn't shared specifics with the County Commissioners.

The commissioners serve as the local Board of Health.

Snook said the commissioners will discuss the results of the state's review.

"Obviously, things like this are disruptive," but the department has a plan in place to continue its daily functions, MacRae said.

Christoffel did not return a phone call Thursday.
