Cowles, Nelson apparently capture most votes in 51st

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. ? Daryl E. Cowles, a Republican, and Democrat Gary Lee Nelson were the apparent top vote-getters in their respective primary races in a bid for the 51st District in the state House of Delegates.

According to complete but unofficial results, Cowles received the most votes in a three-way GOP primary Tuesday, while Nelson received just 10 more votes than second-place finisher Charles Downey Evert.

In the GOP race, Cowles, 35, of Berkeley Springs, received 666 votes. Abby Chapple was next with 368 votes, while George L. Sneathen was third with 185.

In the Democratic race, Nelson, 62, of Berkeley Springs, received 327 votes, while Charles Downey Evert, 62, of Berkeley Springs, received 317, according to complete but unofficial results. Bob Ford, who pulled out of the race, received 191 votes.

The unofficial primary election results include all 13 Morgan County and all five Hampshire County precincts.

The vote canvassing will be Friday at the Morgan County Courthouse.

The two primary winners will face off in the November election. The term length is two years. The annual salary is $15,000.
