WAYNESBORO, PA. ? The death of a 27-year-old correctional officer in a vehicle accident Sunday morning stunned her Franklin County Jail colleagues, the warden said Monday.

Stacey M. Reed, of 210 W. Third St. in Waynesboro, ended her overnight shift at 6:30 a.m. Sunday and crashed a 2005 Dodge Neon into a Mont Alto, Pa., house 35 minutes later.

She was pronounced dead at York (Pa.) Hospital at 10:25 a.m., Pennsylvania State Police said in a news release.

"Something like this is so shocking with someone so young," Warden John Wetzel said.

Reed, a 1999 graduate of Waynesboro Area Senior High School, had been employed with the jail since May and spent most of her time working in the female unit on overnight shifts, he said.

"She was very well-liked among the staff, and her supervisors were very impressed by her," Wetzel said.

A counselor was made available to Reed's colleagues on Monday, Wetzel said.

"People are very sad and very shocked," he said.

Police said Reed's vehicle crossed Pa. 997 and a yard before hitting the house at 313 S. Main St. in Mont Alto.

Further details about the cause of the accident were not available Monday.

Wetzel said jail officials will talk to Reed's family to determine how best to remember her.

According to her obituary, Reed is survived by her parents and three children.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her children and her parents. We want them to know how important she was to us," Wetzel said.

Reed was active in Waynesboro's William Max McLaughlin VFW Post 695, where the ladies auxiliary held a special meeting Monday to remember Reed, who was serving as president.
