CHARLESTON, W.Va. ? West Virginia teachers are some of the worst paid educators in the country, according to an annual review by a national union.

The National Education Association says the average teacher in West Virginia is paid $40,531, more than $10,000 below the national average.

The state's NEA chapter, the West Virginia Education Assocation, is pushing to make up the difference.

The Mountain State ranks 48th in pay for the 2006-07 school year, down from 47th the previous year, according to the NEA.

NEA's survey shows that California teachers earned the most, averaging $63,640, while South Dakota ranked last, with an average salary of $35,378.
