Some metered spaces to be free during holiday

November 23, 1999

Many downtown Hagerstown parking meters will go hungry this holiday season.

The Hagerstown City Council voted 4-0 Tuesday to make metered spaces in certain areas free from Friday to Dec. 24.

The areas that will have free metered parking are:

* The first and second blocks of North and South Potomac streets.

* The first blocks of East and West Franklin streets.

* The first blocks of East and West Washington streets.

* The first block of Summit Avenue.

* The first block of Jonathan Street

* The city's Central Lot.

Councilman J. Wallace McClure said the free parking is a "trade off" for the downtown merchants who put up with a lot of road construction over the summer.

Councilman Lewis C. Metzner left the Tuesday meeting before the matter was voted on.
