Smoke alarms to be checked

November 22, 1999

WILLIAMSPORT - Residents in the Williamsport area can expect a visit from members of their local fire department in the next few weeks.

The firefighters will be checking to see whether smoke alarms are working properly, said Williamsport Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Stumbaugh.

"Our goal is to make sure every house in town has working smoke alarms," he said.

Batteries will be distributed if necessary. Residents whose homes are without smoke alarms will receive them free of charge and firefighters will install them, he said.

The Williamsport Fire Department is also reminding homeowners throughout Washington County to prominently display their house numbers so that firefighters and ambulances can easily find them.

Numbers should be large and placed near the main entrance, he said.

They should be of a contrasting color to the home, he said.

Numerical symbols are recommended rather than signs that spell out the address, he said.
