Nellie G. Diffenderfer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Nellie G. Diffenderfer, 95, a resident of Menno Haven, and formerly of 1321 Lincoln Way East, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Menno Haven.

Born Dec. 19, 1903, in Antrim Township, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Maurice and Susan Faust Brandt.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman G. Diffenderfer, in 1977.

She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Chambersburg.

She was formerly active in Toy Mission in Chambersburg.

She is survived by three sons, N. Kenneth Diffenderfer of Hagerstown, Donald L. Diffenderfer of Bunker Hill, W.Va., and Thomas H. Diffenderfer of Camp Hill, Pa.; one sister, Helen Beaver of Greencastle, Pa.; one half-sister, Pearl Jones of Waynesboro, Pa.; one half-brother, Edward Brandt of Chambersburg, Pa.; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg. The Rev. Stephen W. Hoffman will officiate. Burial will be in St. Thomas Cemetery, St. Thomas, Pa.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Edgar L. Winders

SMITHSBURG - Edgar Lareine Winders, 82, of 22222 Jefferson Blvd., died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999 at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Martinsburg, W.Va.

Born June 6, 1917, in Beaver Creek, Md., he was the son of the late Edgar B. and Sadie F. Bachtell Winders.

He was a 1934 graduate of Boonsboro High School and attended Columbia Business College.

He was employed for Hoffman's Clothing Store, Hagerstown for 54 years.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Smithsburg serving on the council, was a Sunday School teacher and financial secretary.

He was a member of Morris Frock Post 42 American Legion and B.P.O. Elks Lodge 378, both of Hagerstown; Eagles Club Inc., Waynesboro, Pa.; member and Past President and Treasurer of Smithsburg Lions Club; life member of Smithsburg Volunteer Fire Company; Sunshine Leisure Club of Smithsburg and National A.A.R.P.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sudie E. Hershberger Winders; two daughters, S. Loretta Ruths of Stephens City, Va. and Bonnie Schaller of Smithsburg; four grandsons; one granddaughter; seven great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Nora Stine Winders; one granddaughter and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 16 N. Main St., Smithsburg. The Rev. Mark Walters, the Rev. Julie Brigham, the Rev. Clay Moyer and the Rev. John Ericson will officiate. Burial will be in Smithsburg Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 at Davis Funeral Home, Smithsburg.

Ronald F. Phillips

Ronald F. Phillips, 61, of 20806 Emerald Drive, Hagerstown, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, New London, Conn.

Born Dec. 29, 1937 in Ridgeley, W.Va., he was the son of the late William Edgar Phillips, Sr. and Regina Payne Phillips Collins.

He was employed with Washington County Board of Education as a principal at Paramount Elementary School and later retired from Old Forge Elementary School after 35 years of service.

He was a member of National Association of Elementary School Principals; Maryland Association of School Principals; and Washington County Association of Elementary School Principals serving on the Executive Board and the Chairperson of the Citizenship Award.

He was a charter member of Washington County Hall of Fame. He was a member of the Medairy Lodge A.F.&A. M. 140.

He was past President of Washington County Recreation and Parks Advisory Board. He served on the Board of Directors for the Black Rock Golf Course.

He was a member of Dream Come True where he served on the executive board and as president.

He was a past member of the board of directors of the Hagerstown Junior College Foundation and a past president of Hagerstown Junior College Athletic Boosters Club.

He was a past member of the Governor's Commission on Children and Youth of Washington County.

He was a member of B.P.O.E., Hagerstown Lodge 378 and he was past chairman of Youth Activities Committee, Scholarship Committee and Teenager of the Year Committee.

He was a past member of board of directors of Valley Little League/Senior League Baseball and board of directors of Smithsburg, Leitersburg, Chewsville Athletic League. He was a past vice president of Washington County Coaches Association.
