South girls use hat tricks to drop Saints

Emily Middlekauff and Mallory Tsetsilas both had hat tricks with three goals Wednesday to lead the South Hagerstown girls soccer team to an 8-0 victory over St. James.

Stephanie Shrader had a goal and two assists while Heather White also scored for the Rebels (4-4). Stephanie Shrader and Karrie Hawbaker had two assists while Leslie Spielman and Middlekauff had one assist each.

Catoctin 3, Boonsboro 1

THURMONT, Md. - Boonsboro tied the game early in the second half, but Lindsay Gladhill picked up a goal and an assist late in the second half to lead No. 9 Catoctin in the Monocacy Valley Athletic League.

Gladhill scored in th e first half for a 1-0 lead before Lindsay Hicks put one in from Ashley Reeder to tie the game for Boonsboro (2-5, 1-3). But Gladhill crossed to Cyndi Benjamin for a 2-1 lead, then scored unassisted to close the game for the Cougars (4-3-1, 2-2). Cara Peckens had 18 saves for the Warriors.

Clear Spring 1, Hedgesville 1

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Hedgesville's Holly Mansfield and Clear Spring's Kristina Ullrich each scored goals as the Eagles and Blazers played to a tie.

Hedgesville (4-7-1) outshot Clear Spring, 18-13. Summer Williams recorded six saves for Hedgesville before leaving in the fourth quarter with an injury. Karie Mowen had 10 saves for Clear Spring (1-6-1).

Maret 2, Mercersburg 1

WASHINGTON - Ignacio Fornies scored from Josh Gray, but Mercersburg couldn't overcome a penalty kick miss in the second half against the Frogs.

Monford Russell had five saves for the Blue Storm (6-3, 4-3 Mid-Atlantic Conference), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped.

St. Andrews 4, St. James 2

POTOMAC, Md. - Jamie Holzapfel scored twice, once on an assist from Rehan Waheed, but the Saints remained winless in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. Peter Mundey had 16 saves for St. James (1-6-1, 0-6).

Highland View 4, Shalom 1

Cleidson Jackson scored twice in the second half as the Tartans pulled away for the victory Tuesday night.

Gustavo Ciccopiedi scored twice for Highland View (6-4-1) in the first half, and Jackson and Ciccopiedi also had assists. Aron Miller (10 saves) and Will Iverson (16) kept the Tartans ahead despite being outshot, 30-22.

St. James 169, Hedgesville 189 St. Andrews 205

Ryan Moul shot a 38 to lead St. James in a tri-match victory. John Gearhart shot a 43.

Mercersburg wins tournament

Mercersburg Academy held off The Heights by one stroke to win an 18-hole tournament played at Beaver Creek Country Club for the third straight year.

Mercersburg Academy shot 377, followed by The Heights (378), St. James JV (381), Highland (383), Tacoma/Spencerville (387) and St. John's-Prospect Hall (441).

Higland View's Justin Young won individual honors with an 86, while St. James' Will Mc-Keachie tied Mercersburg's Rhett Riddle with an 88.

North Hagerstown 177 Smithsburg 187, Brunswick 190

North Hagerstown's Brian Huffman had a 42 to lead the Hubs to a tri-match victory at Black Rock Golf Course. Brunswick's Brent Levigne was the medalist by shooting a 37 while Ashley Grier led Smithsburg with a 40.

Walkersville 156, Urbana 160 Middletown 186

FREDERICK, Md. - The Lions put three players in the 30s to take a tri-match at Glade Valley. Jimmy Cunningham's 37 led Walkersville, while Mark Angleberger shot 38 and Eli Baltic added a 39 for the Lions. Chad Bohn's 44 led Middletown.

Middletown 3, Catoctin 0

THURMONT, Md. - Sarah Yocum had five assists and Larin Canella had three kills, but Middletown (5-2) pulled out a 15-2, 15-5, 15-7 sweep of Catoctin (1-5).

Greencastle 2, Bermudian Springs 0

BERMUDIAN SPRINGS, Pa. - Tabitha Elshelman had 51 assists and 13 digs to lead Greencastle to the win. Brandi Raifsnider had seven service points, 15 hits, eight kills and six digs while Danielle Grove had nine service points and 10 digs for Greencastle (10-0).

HCC 3, Charles 2

LaPLATA, Md. - Katie Baker had 13 digs, 16 service points and 18 kills as Hagerstown Community College survived an error-filled match for a 3-2 victory.

The Hawks (21-4, 5-1 Maryland JuCo) won 17-15, 13-15, 15-12, 8-15, 15-13 despite 14 service errors, including back-to-back situations with a 7-2 lead during rally play in the fifth game. HCC also had 16 spike errors and 10 pass errors in the match.

Rachel Bachtell had 13 kills, Kelly Martin had 35 assists and Jennifer Johnson had 13 service points and 15 digs for HCC.
