I-70 interchange set to open Wednesday

September 23, 1999

The Interstate 70-Downsville Pike interchange will open next Wednesday, a State Highway Administration spokesman said Thursday.

The interchange was scheduled to open Sept. 8 but unexpected problems delayed the opening, first until Sept. 22 and then to next Wednesday, spokesman David Buck said.

The initial delay was caused by problems a subcontractor had obtaining sign structures directing motorists onto the off-ramp, he said.

The more recent delay was caused by weather problems, including rain from the remnants of Hurricane Floyd, he said.

A ceremony will be held later for the off-ramp's opening, probably with Maryland Gov. Parris Glendening, but no date has been set, he said.

The $6.17 million project is designed to address growth in the region, he said. The federal government is footing 80 percent of the bill for the interchange and the state 20 percent.
