Traffic accident leads to charges

When Jason Lee King overturned his 1994 Ford Mustang on southbound Interstate 81 Tuesday night, his troubles were only beginning.

King, 24, of 450 Howes Road, Chambersburg, Pa., fled the scene of the 10:17 p.m. accident just north of Halfway Boulevard, according to Maryland State Police.

But about 45 minutes later he was located on Hopewell Road and taken into custody, charged with driving while intoxicated, driving on a suspended license, hit-and-run and being a fugutive from justice in Pennsylvania.

Trooper First Class Scott Bare said King was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. He was released back into police custody, spending the night at the barracks.


He will appear before a bond commissioner sometime today.


Damage estimated at $15,000 in fire

Damage is estimated at about $15,000 in a fire that brought Funkstown firefighters out Tuesday night at 9:40 for a fire in a second-floor apartment on Abbey Lane off the Dual Highway.

"The cause of the blaze is under investigation," said Maryland State Fire Investigator Jim Woods.

No one was home at the time of the blaze, which started in a back bedroom of the apartment. Woods said the apartment was furnished and rented but no one was home Tuesday evening.

Firefighters evacuated the 1819 Abbey Lane building until the fire was out. All occupants were able to return including the residents under Apt. B where the fire burned through the floor.

Assisting Funkstown were Mt. Aetna, Junior, Pioneer Hook and Ladder, the Washington County air and rehab units and Community Rescue Service.

The last firefighters left the scene at 3 a.m.


Man faces drug charges

Agents from the Washington County Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant at 203 S. Prospect St. Monday night and made one arrest.

Calvin Moore, 40, of that address, was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of cocaine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to NTF spokesman Bob Leatherman.

The 8:30 p.m. search netted a moderate amount of cocaine, Leatherman said.

Moore is being held at the Washington County Detention Center on $60,000 bond.


Missing girl found by police

Hagerstown City Police on Tuesday afternoon found a 3-year-old child who had been missing for an hour.

The girl, whom police identified only as Vicky, was last seen in the area of the 100 block of Cypress Street at 1:20 p.m.

She was found by officers at 2:30 p.m. in the basement of her home.

The child was not harmed and was reunited with her mother, police said.


Woman injured in wreck in Halfway

HALFWAY - A woman was injured in a two-vehicle accident at Halfway Boulevard and Hopewell Road Tuesday evening, according to Alan Matheny of the Volunteer Fire Company of Halfway.

A sedan and a sport utility vehicle collided head-on around 7:12 p.m., he said.

The woman driving the SUV was taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, he said.

About 10 firefighters from Halfway and Williamsport responded to the accident.

The names and addresses of those involved were unavailable.


Marijuana seed found in vehicle

A marijuana seed on the floor of a Smithsburg man's vehicle led to drug charges Tuesday evening after a traffic stop, Washington County Sheriff's deputies said.

Chad Alexander Knepper, 29, of 14222 Poplar Grove Road, was pulled over at 5:40 p.m. on Md. 418 just west of Md. 64, deputies said.

Deputy Maxwell Kline spotted the marijuana seed on the floor of the car and then asked Knepper for consent to search. A plastic baggie of marijuana and drug paraphernalia was then found, deputies said.

Knepper was charged with possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia.


Man grabs woman's purse

Hagerstown City Police are investigating a strong-arm robbery Monday night and a Tuesday morning armed robbery.

In the Monday incident, the woman victim said she was walking in the first block of South Cramer's Alley at 9 p.m. when a man came up behind her and pushed her, grabbing her purse.

The loss was $27.

Tuesday at 7:40 a.m., a man said he was walking in the 100 block of North Prospect Street when he was approached from the rear by a masked man who stuck a hard object in his back and demanded money.

The man handed over $10.


Stereo, 18 CDs stolen from vehicle

Thieves got a stereo and 18 CDs from a vehicle Tuesday night that was parked at the Hagerstown Cinemas on Leitersburg Pike, according to Washington County Sheriff's deputies.

Cash in the amount of $400 was taken from Terry's Auto Center at 801 N. Main St. in Boonsboro Tuesday, deputies said.

And from the Yogi Bear Jellystone Park campgrounds at 16519 Lappans Road, a 29-foot white and green trailer was stolen Tuesday, deputies said.

A $600 window was broken out of Room 116 at the Four Points Hotel on the Dual Highway Tuesday, deputies said.
