Portion of HotSpots grant application OK'd

Hagerstown's Mayor and City Council Tuesday informally approved a portion of a grant application, which will request funding for two new city police officers.

The request is part of a revised application for the Maryland HotSpot Communities Initiative grant.

Cut from a previous draft application, which the council discussed last week, were requests for two more police officers, a drug dog and surveillance equipment.

Hagerstown Police Lt. Margaret Kline, who is involved in putting together the grant application, said state officials told her the grant award would be for no more than $200,000, which prompted elimination of several funding requests.

The grant application, which is due Monday, will request $35,000 for each of the two new officers, Kline said.

The HotSpot grant currently funds more than $100,000 in crime-fighting and community-building programs in Hagerstown.
