The Cloppers

Barbara and Kenny Clopper of Clear Spring celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a surprise party hosted by their children, family and friends Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Broadfording Church of the Brethren Fellowship in Hagerstown.

The Cloppers were married Sept. 12, 1959, at the Lutheran parsonage.

They both are graduates of Clear Spring High School. After high school, while in the Air Force, the Cloppers lived all over the world and recently moved back to Clear Spring.

They both are active members of Clear Spring Historical Association.

The Reichards

Ed and Jean Reichard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Friday, Aug. 6, 1999, at a party at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Mount Aetna Road in Hagerstown. The event was hosted by their children, Nancy Hord, Doug and Steve Reichard, daughter-in-law Debbie Reichard, and friends Judy and Bud Saunders of Myersville, Md. Family, friends and neighbors attended.


Mrs. Reichard is the former Jean Davis of Hagerstown, daughter of the late Robert and Cora Davis. She retired from American Type Culture Collection in Rockville, Md.

Mr. Reichard retired as a stationary engineer from Condominium Ventures in Greenbelt, Md.

One son, Gary Reichard, died in 1981.

They have 10 grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

The Bitners

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Bitner of Hagerstown celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, June 13, 1999, at a surprise reception and luncheon at Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel. The event was hosted by their sons, Hal Bitner and Mike Bitner, and daughter-in-law, Janie Bitner. It was attended by family and friends.

Mike Bitner read a poem titled "Parent." He also read his parents' wedding announcement as it appeared in The Herald-Mail 50 years ago. Both sons talked about what their parents mean to them. Tributes were given by Pastor Dave Kaplan, Albert Davis and David Raymer. A champagne toast was given by Mrs. Bitner's brother, Ruben Hoyle.

The Bitners were married June 17, 1949, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church by the Rev. Edward P. Heinze, now deceased.

Mrs. Bitner is the former Mildred Hoyle. She retired from the Board of Education in 1995 with 32 years of service. She works part-time at the Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Mr. Bitner retired from Potomac Edison Co. in 1988 with 40 years of service.

Mr. and Mrs. Bitner have three grandchildren.
