Mail Call for 9/16

September 16, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Why does Governor Glendening have to have his nose stuck in the college campus for downtown? The only time he knows us is when he wants to tell us what to do. Let him take care of Baltimore and all of his other friends and let us decide what we want to do. The people have spoken!"

"The Board of Education employees need to stop whining and use their heads for what they have been intended for. If you want your paychecks, think about having them mailed to your home, then it won't take a week if the weather is bad. Use your heads and stop whining for a change, really getting tired of listening to it."

"I have a child that goes to Western Heights and is in fifth grade. I was wondering if someone could explain to me what an assistant is? My daughter is in class with a child that has a learning problem and my child is entertaining her. Where does the assistant fit in that is being paid $10 an hour? She does nothing but stand around and look pretty. My child is there to learn and I understand that the other child needs to learn, too, but if you are paying someone $10 an hour to be one on one with that child then that person needs to be with that child, not mine. Please call in your comments."

"So the governor of Maryland is going to visit Hagerstown for two hours to visit two sites for the University of Maryland and he is bullheaded not to visit the Hagerstown Community College and if we don't get that site then I hope it backfires right in your face."

"About the sales clerk at Lowe's and me wanting to thank her, well her name is Terri Tucker not Judy Tucker, I made a mistake. Thanks again Terri, thank you very much."

"To whoever took the golden horseshoe with 'brother' inscribed on it, from his sister at Rest Haven Cemetery. It had sentimental memories between my brother and I. I wish very much if you would please put it back. It wasn't worth anything to you only to my brother and I. I am pretty sure I know who you are. Please put it back. May God bless you."

"To the caller who thinks the Ten Commandments will solve all of our problems. I don't remember reading anywhere in the commandments where it says 'Thou shalt not have the same-sex marriage.' Why don't you check your facts first."

"I lost a watch somewhere between AC&T in Smithsburg, Grace Academy, McDonald's on Dual Highway, Ames Shopping Center. If anyone finds it, I would appreciate it, if you would turn it into any of these places and leave a message in Mail Call. It has sentimental value, it was left to me by my grandmother. Thanks a lot."

"Can someone tell me where the little cottage is near Smithsburg called Deer Mountain? Could they leave a number and tell me where it is?"

"I want to publicly thank area merchants of the Washington County and Hagerstown area, such as Wal-Mart, Sam's Club and Lowe's for providing the motorized carts and wheelchairs for the handicapped and leg impaired. Thanks folks for thinking of us the customers."
