Completion of parking lot gets go-ahead

Hagerstown's Mayor and City Council told city staff on Tuesday to move forward with a $542,000 plan to finish the city's downtown northeast quadrant parking lot by June 2000.

The city has already spent more than $1.15 million on the lot - constructing a new parking area off East Washington Street, renovating a parking area off North Potomac Street and tearing down three buildings.

The additional $542,000 for the project would pay for construction of a parking lot, putting new lights on the lot and relocating some utility lines below ground.

City officials are expected to ask the Washington County Commissioners to contribute $182,500 to the project. They are expected to discuss the plan with the commissioners during a joint city-county meeting Tuesday.

Under the proposed plan, the city would begin seeking competitive bids for the project in December.

Construction could be completed in June 2000.

Once completed there would be 300 parking spaces in the lot.
