Marlys Palmer has accomplished a lot as the volleyball coach for Hagerstown Community College.

She had won nine straight regular-season championships in the Maryland JUCO Conference before Catonsville stopped the streak last season. She has won nine Region XX Tournament championships in the last 10 years.

On Friday night, Palmer won her 600th career match when the Hawks swept Potomac State College 15-12, 15-7 in the first game of their tri-match at the HCC athletic complex.

Hagerstown then defeated LeHigh Carbon 15-8, 13-15, 15-4 to give Palmer win No. 601.

"I'm happy that this team could get it for me, because this team is really shaping up to be a special team," Palmer said. "The Washington County and the Tri-State area programs have made my program."

The only two returning sophomores, Katie Baker and Jennifer Johnson, were happy to see Palmer get her milestone victory.

"She deserves it," Baker said. "Her hard work has paid off. She is just an exceptional coach."

Baker ended the second game against Potomac State with five service points, with the last three coming on service aces. Johnson tallied six straight service points late in the third game against Lehigh Carbon to boost the Hawks' lead to 13-2.

"I am very excited for her," Johnson said. "After all of the years of dedication that she has had to the volleyball team, I think that she really deserves it."

Baker collected 27 kills, 14 digs and 13 service points, while Johnson scored 17 service points.
