Eye doctor offers farmers free eye exams

September 10, 1999

A Hagerstown eye doctor is offering free service to uninsured Washington County farmers in financial straits.

Dr. William Flittie, 47, an ophthalmologist at Potomac Eye Specialists, 322 E. Antietam St., said financial difficulties shouldn't bar farmers from proper eye care.

The eye surgeon's empathy for farmers is rooted in his own background.

He was born into a farming family in South Dakota, and hardships recently forced his cousin to quit the profession, said Flittie, who has been practicing in Hagerstown since 1997.

In addition to free eye care, Flittie said the local Wal Mart's optical department will give 10 percent discounts on glasses to farmers referred by him.
