Marine 1st Lt. Ana P. Hayes, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Curtis G. Hayes of Frederick, Md., recently received a Letter of Appreciation while assigned with Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Smith, Hawaii. She is a 1992 graduate of Gov. Thomas Johnson High School and a 1996 graduate of St. Mary's College of Maryland, St. Mary's City, Md., with a bachelor of arts degree.




Army 1st Lt. Matthew L. Ingraham, son of Paulette Ingraham of Middletown, Md., has been decorated with the Army Commendation Medal for demonstrating outstanding achievement or meritorious service in the performance of his duties on behalf of the Army. This is his second award of the medal.

Ingraham is a task force engineer with the 9th Engineer Battalion in Schweinfurt, Germany. He is a 1986 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1991 graduate of the University of Idaho, Moscow.




Army Pvt. John E. Harrison, son of Jon L. Harrison of Frederick, Md., has arrived at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga., to complete basic military training.

Nikolas J. Asaro, son of Sherri L. and James L. Asaro of Hagerstown, has graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. He is currently a student at Valley Forge Military Academy and College, Wayne, Pa. He is a 1998 graduate of South Hagerstown High School.




U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Ruth M. Eckert, daughter of Robert D. and Carolyn L. Boyer, Chambersburg, Pa., has retired from the U.S. Army after more than 20 years of military service.

Prior to retiring, Eckert was the quality and utilization management chief assigned to the Office of the Command Surgeon at Scott Air Force Base, Belleville, Ill.

Her husband, Douglas, is the son of Roy T. Eckert of Farmington, Mich.

The colonel is a 1974 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School and a 1977 graduate from the York Hospital School of Nursing, York, Pa. In 1985, she received a bachelor's degree in nursing from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and earned a master's degree with a concentration in cardiovascular nursing in 1991 from the University of California in San Francisco.




Matthew E. Gillespie, son of George A. and Gloria P. Gillespie of Coon Rapids, Minn., has graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. He is currently a student at Shippensburg University, Pa.

His wife, Teresa, is the daughter of Freddie and Kil Cha Joye of Waynesboro, Pa.

He is a 1991 graduate from Coon Rapids Senior High School and received an associate degree in 1995 from the University of Maryland in Heidelberg, Germany.




Preston R. Wallech, son of Nathan M. and Esther M. Wallech of Hagerstown, has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force after graduating from Officer Training School (OTS) at Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. He is a 1991 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and received an associate degree in 1993 from Hagerstown Community College. He earned a bachelor's degree in 1998 from the University of Maryland, through the military extension program.




Air Force Airman 1st Class Christopher L. Cauthen has arrived for duty at Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va. He is an information management specialist assigned to the 1st Communications Squadron.

His guardians are Gary and Julie Dull of Chambersburg, Pa.

He is a 1998 graduate of Chambersburg Area Senior High School.




Michael L. High, son of Debbie G. and Joseph L. High of Frederick, Md., has graduated from the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) Advanced Camp at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash. He is currently a student at American University, Washington, D.C.

He is a 1996 graduate of Walkersville High School, Walkersville, Md.




Marine Pvt. Kenneth L. Hight, son of Charles L. Hight of Hedgesville, W.Va., recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

He is a 1992 graduate of Hedgesville High School.
