Park expansion opposed

September 09, 1999

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A list of 35 names of Harpers Ferry-area property owners opposed to the expansion of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park was presented to the Jefferson County Commissioners Thursday.

The people whose names are on the list are opposed to the expansion because they believe it will "cast a pall over the value and uses of our real estate," said property owner Terri Capriotti.

Other Harpers Ferry-area residents have complained to the commissioners about the expansion, which is proposed by the Harpers Ferry Conservancy.

The conservancy is seeking the support of the commission, but the commission does not have the power to stop the expansion. Some fear that if they do not sell their land to the park, they will be surrounded by the recreational area, which will decrease the value of their land.

The commissioners are considering holding a hearing on the expansion, but no date has been set.

The expansion would increase the size of the park by 1,200 acres. It currently takes up 2,300 acres.
