Mail Call for 9/2/99

September 02, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Mr. White of the city's Purchasing Department has time to place eBay auction bids. Maybe the Mayor and Council should consider if he has so much time, allowing him to do the minutes that they are behind on."

"Yes, I want to wish my husband, Jack Smith, a happy 28th anniversary on Sept. 3. Love, Robin."

"Yes, we'd like to wish our Nanny and Pappy, Jack and Robin Smith, a happy 28th anniversary. Love, Felicia, Davey, Timothy, Daniel and Christopher."

"I'm calling in regard to the Chessie Fox cancer fund. They were going to have a dinner dance at Williamsport Fire Hall for her to raise money for her to go to Disney World. This had to be canceled due to lack of interest in the community. I am encouraging people to stand behind this young lady in her fight with cancer. My husband delivered meals to her when she first got sick. We have known her all during this - about four years now - and we would like the community, Washington County, Hagerstown, to really rally around her and do something."

"Well, according to the comptroller of the treasury office, entertainment taxes collected in Washington County reveal quite a bit. The Hagerstown Suns aren't even in the top 10. The entertainment tax collected at the gate for those attending Suns baseball was only $16,000. This is a subsidized operation, it has been a subsidized operation, it always will be a subsidized operation. Anybody that tells you that we need to build a welfare program stadium for Blenckstone is living in a dream world."

"Does anyone know where in Hagerstown I can shop for one of those $11 or $12 pair of glasses that you use to read with? Please put it in Mail Call if you do."

"I was reading an article about bingo spending declining. Well, one of the reasons is that the same people are winning all the time and some people are getting pretty tired of that."

"Hi, Mail Call. Regarding the Board of Education and safety of the schools. I would not be a teacher or a bus driver for all the money in the world. I do not envy them. They have a rough job. Especially on those buses, they need to have mirrors up on top, so the bus drivers see what's really going on instead of half the things sometimes. I don't envy them. They have a rough job. That's all."

"Why don't they publish the names or all these kids, 12 years old and up, that's doing things? Maybe it would stop some of it. The more the names aren't published, the more they figure they can get away with stuff. They should lock 'em up, all of 'em, and publish their names."

"Well, I guess that's what happens when you're not careful, you're rushing, you don't take your time - you are liable to get yourself into trouble. I just read about the accident over in Funkstown and I think it's kind of silly that this house has been hit more than one time. People need to learn to be more careful and take their time a little bit more. Oh sure, it's a busy lifestyle, a busy world and keeps us all on the go. But, still, use a little intelligence, use your head and I think you will get along a lot better than if you rush things. Thank you."

"Hi. I really hope that you do print this for all high school and middle school students. This is directed to the teachers. I am a parent and my children are in sports and also in band, and they are well-rounded. This is the second day of school and both of my children have had homework in every subject. I've talked to many other parents in the county and they feel the same exact way. I think if you want your children to be well-rounded - I think a little homework's fine - you need to have some kind of discipline in your life - but not in every subject. You can't expect children to continually do homework, homework, homework - and also try to be in the band and try to do athletics. I hope that this reaches the teachers, and I pray that you print this. I think this will help parents and students everywhere."

"Animals do not have souls, therefore they do not go to heaven. And the woman who said, 'when all else fails, call on Jesus.' You should be calling on Jesus first."

"This message is just to welcome Ronald back to Mount Lena United Methodist Church in Boonsboro. You've been missed. It's great to see that you're back."
