Crumbs from the Cracker Barrel

September 01, 1999

In 1907 Cascade area resident Thaddeus Wastler was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates. One of the bills that Wastler sponsored placed the American flag in all classrooms throughout the state and called for daily reading of the Bible. In 1900 when the Buena Vista Ice Co. began operations on the site of what later became Fort Ritchie, it took advantage of lakes Royer and Wastler, which had been constructed by Wastler.
