John B. Ashkettle

HANCOCK - John B. Ashkettle, 35, of Rice Road, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 1999, at Washington County Hospital.

Born July 6, 1964, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Bernard L. and Irma B. Lewis Ashkettle of Hancock.

He was a 1982 graduate of Hancock High School.

He was employed as a printer with Boonsboro Printing and Indexing in Boonsboro.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Hancock; and St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Little Orleans, Md.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a twin sister, Mary Appel of Warfordsburg, Pa.; three brothers, Lynn B. Ashkettle of Hancock, Joseph A. Ashkettle of Warfordsburg and Matthew J. Ashkettle of Flintstone, Md.; four nieces; three nephews and maternal grandmother, Mary Brooks of Hancock.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, East High Street, Hancock. The Rev. George W. Glick will be celebrant. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock, where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m.

The family requests the omission of flowers.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Washington County, Inc., 101 E. Baltimore St., Hagerstown, MD 21740; or to a church of one's choice.

Patsy L. Landers

HANCOCK - Patsy Louise Landers, 50, of West Main Street, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Morgan County War Memorial Hospital in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

Born Dec. 6, 1948, in Paw Paw, W.Va., she was the daughter of Ernest H. and Wilda O. Montgomery Sipes of Hancock.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Lee Landers, in 1994.

She was employed by Fleetwood in Williamsport, as an assembler.

She attended Black Oak Mennonite Church in Warfordsburg, Pa.

She was sergeant at arms for Ladies Auxiliary of Webster B. Harrison Post No. 26 American Legion, Hancock. She was a member of Loyal Order of the Moose No. 1483 in Berkeley Springs.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Christina D. Landers of Hancock; a son, Wyatt S. Landers of Hancock; three sisters, Evangeline Joy Shutt of Grove City, Ohio, Betty L. Saunders of Hagerstown and Debbie D. Truax of Hancock; two brothers, Bernard H. Sipes of Hancock and J. Marvin Sipes of Williamsport; and two granddaughters.

She was preceded in death by a son, Christopher L. Landers; and a brother, Ernest J. Sipes.

Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Black Oak Mennonite Church, Warfordsburg. The Rev. Richard E. Rutherford Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Grove Funeral Home, 141 W. Main St., Hancock; and Tuesday one hour before the services at the church. For the convenience of friends, the funeral home will be open Monday from 2 to 9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Hancock Community Bank, In Trust for Granddaughters, Kayla and Kristen Shoemaker, Hancock, MD 21750.

Ethel M. Bachtell

BIG POOL - Ethel M. Bachtell, 90, formerly of 11171 Big Pool Road, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at Williamsport Nursing Home, Williamsport.

Born Oct. 8, 1908, in Big Pool, she was the daughter of the late James D. and Emma J. Roof Hart.

Her first husband, Lloyd M. Beauchamp, died in 1938. Her second husband, Merlel Bachtell, died in 1976.

She retired from Victor Products, Hagerstown.

She was a lifetime member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Big Pool, and taught Sunday school for many years.

She is survived by one son, Samuel H. Beauchamp Sr. of Big Pool; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Betty Jane Beauchamp Gantz.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Big Pool. The Revs. Dennis Whitmore and Tom Perry will officiate.

A memorial service will follow at 11:45 a.m. Monday at St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Visitation will be at the church today from 3 to 5 p.m.

Arrangements are by Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown.

Florence Mentzer

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Florence Mentzer, 84, of 2248 Ivan Road, and formerly of the Price Church and Five Forks area in Pennsylvania, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at Falling Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Chambersburg.

Born Nov. 25, 1914, in Waynesboro, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Ervin E. and Mary Ellen Welty Newcomer.

She was a homemaker. Before she was married, she worked for Stanley Manufacturing Company.

She was a member of Five Forks Brethren in Christ Church, Five Forks.

She was a member of AARP National and South Chapter.
