Mail Call for 8/24

August 24, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"Has anyone at the Board of Education calculated or even thought about the thousands of gallons of water that will be consumed when students return to school on Aug. 30 in Washington County? Since there is a obviously a water crisis and water preservation is a top priority, why not delay the opening of school for students until after Labor Day? Then they can use that extra week, to finish the construction at South High and other maintenance jobs at other schools. In turn we would be helping the farmers and our futures. We all need water. Thank you."

"To the person that wants to have the athletic fields watered because their children play school athletics and this means more to them than water. For me to have water to drink, bathe and sew on, means more to me than kids playing on the athletic fields. Apparently these people have never been short of water."

"Today is Friday, it looks and feels like rain. But, if you live close to peach orchards, you won't see any. You won't get much rain in August. I have been following the pattern during peach season for 15 years, I really do think that the clouds are being seeded during the month of August."

"To the person concerned about the cameras at stop lights, they don't take pictures of the front plates, they take pictures of the rear plates. So the West Virginia and Virginia license plates will be taken by the camera along with Maryland. So remember it takes pictures of the rear plates, not the front plates."

"To Dr. Hutchins, Kim and staff at Potomac Family Dental. I want to say a big thank you. Dr. Hutchins, I think you are an exceptional person, you took your valuable time to make a difference in my life. You are all wonderful. If anybody wants a great dentist and a great staff, go see Potomac Valley Family Dental Practice. Thank you, from Tracey."

"To the person who said I am a one-way street person, it might be kind and sweet to ask for somebody to come back to you, but do we really need to know that? Does anybody really care? Come on now, this isn't a real issue, just call the person yourself and tell them you want them back, send them flowers. Don't put it in Mail Call."

"Do you want an issue? My girlfriend is on a cheerleading squad at a high school. I don't appreciate the coaches making them wear those uniforms that don't even cover a quarter of their legs. You wonder why those girls are always getting sexually harassed. It is because they have to wear those outfits that are so short and tight. They need to do something to make them more modern. Cheerleading is not a sexual sport, it is a sport that shows you are proud of their school."

"I would like to know why the Board of Education is allowed to water their athletic fields and not be fined? I can't water my garden or grass at all. That is not fair."

"Hello friends. I just wanted to remind you to support our local bands. They work very hard, without much pay. We really have some great local talent. Let's be supportive."

"I was very happy to see the article about James Buchanan High School banning the use of knapsacks in the classroom. But I also agree that Washington County should adopt one of their other rules, their objection to fights, whenever someone up there is arrested. We definitely need that in Washington County, especially in middle schools. Let the parents pay for some of the abuse that their children are giving. Plus it would be a safer place for all of our kids."

"This is for the Washington County school teacher who left a message about the air conditioning in the school and about wearing uniforms. Well my son goes to Salem Avenue and that school is not air-conditioned, so get your priorities straight."

"To the person who is looking to get a gas heater taken care of. I deal with United Propane and they are wonderful, give them a call."

"To the person who called about the two dogs at the Marlowe exit. The dogs I am talking about, I see when I am sitting in the traffic jam every day. No one trespassed on your property, but maybe they should. Sounds to me like you have a guilty conscience. Call me nosy if you want, but I would do it every time, if it helped a poor defenseless animal out."
