Participants in The United Way of Washington County's eighth annual Day of Caring gathered at the agency's headquarters in Hagerstown on Thursday to announce plans for the Sept. 1 event.

Day of Caring fields teams from local businesses to undertake improvement projects in the community.

"For business partners, it's a time to nurture the nurturers," said Cynthia Oates, who handles communications initiatives for the United Way. "For member agencies, it's a time to share their mission with the people who care about this community."

After United Way Board President Richard Gagliardi gave a brief history of the "annual celebration of community spirit," representatives from the sponsors of this year's event presented checks to United Way Executive Director Kathleen Hall.

Columbia Gas Co. of Maryland is the lead sponsor with a donation of $4,000. Citicorp Credit Services Inc. and St. Lawrence Cement Co. each pledged $1,000.

The daylong event will begin with a 7 a.m. breakfast at the Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, and will for the first time also mark the kick-off of the 1999 United Way giving campaign, said drive Chairman James Pierne.

The campaign goal will be announced on Sept. 1, he said.
