There's a new boss at Hagerstown's ice rink.

Jamie Shyda has taken over day-to-day operations at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex on Security Road in Hagerstown.

Shyda, 44, of Hagerstown, worked for the Washington County Recreation and Parks Department from 1989 through 1993. When she left the department she was the recreation superintendent and in charge of supervising the staff of the recreation division.

From 1993 to 1996, Shyda lived in Raleigh, N.C., where she worked for a private nonprofit agency organizing programs for senior citizens. She returned to the Hagerstown area in 1996 and worked as a sales representative.

Shyda has been named executive director at the ice rink, which is closed for the summer and expected to reopen for skating on Sept. 3.

She was given a one-year contract by the Washington County Sports Foundation, the private nonprofit group that oversees the rink operations.

"She's a real sharp lady and we're real fortunate to get her," said Gary Wright, chairman of the board for the foundation.

"Her main objective is to increase and expand usage of the rink," Wright said. "We need more people going around in circles."

Shyda said she took the job because she is "extremely interested" in public recreation.

"I'm excited to help the team along here," she said.

Shyda is president of the Exchange Club of Antietam.
