Thumbs up, thumbs down

August 06, 1999

Thumbs up!To Lysa Selfon of Lancaster, Pa., who was struck by lightning a year ago, who has since begun raising funds for the burn center where she was treated. Her goal is $50,000.

Thumbs up!To George Miller and family, who donated an 1,144-pound black angus steer to be auctioned off during the Berkeley County Youth Fair, to help the family of the late Jordy Carper in Hedgesville, W.Va. pay medical bills.

Thumbs up!To Hagerstown Firefighters Local 1605, for their $1,000 donation to send a group of city youngsters to Pennsylvania's Dorney Amusement Park. Thanks to your gift, more children will have fun.

Thumbs down!To Hagerstown city officials considering raising parking meter rates and parking rental charges downtown. If you're looking for a way to chase potential customers away, why not just hand shoppers free bus tickets to Valley Mall?

Thumbs down!To the Hagers-town City Council, for donating $15,000 to keep the Community Free Clinic running through September. Government has stepped up; now where's business?

? ? ?To Berkeley County, W.Va. officials, for seeking help with the roundhouse restoration project from city councils in Maryland and Virginia. A gutsy request, but imagine taxpayers' howls if Maryland cash went to a West Virginia project.

Thumbs up!To U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, for the work he and other government officials are doing to preserve jobs at the General Motors parts plant in Martinsburg, W.Va.

Thumbs down!To the person or persons who tried to ignite a flammable liquid near Redland Brick corporate headquarters in Williamsport and who threw an explosive device at a patrol car parked nearby. This doesn't help the collective-bargaining process.

Thumbs up!To the Prudential Insurance company, for its donation of portable cardiac defibrillator to the Sharpsburg ambulance service. On behalf of all whose lives it will save, thank you.

Thumbs up!To Dr. Connie Anton, the Washington County Mental Health Center's medical director, for the work she did to win the Expemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. A competent, caring pro, by all reports.
