Firefighters donate $1,000 to trip for kids

August 01, 1999|By MARLO BARNHART

Only $800 more is needed to send all the youngsters who signed up for the Aug. 14 bus trip to Pennsylvania's Dorney Park - thanks to the Hagerstown Firefighters Local 1605.

"We just got a $1,000 donation from the firefighters," Clara Broadus said Thursday. Broadus is one of the organizers of the second annual For Our Kids Sake trip.

The total needed for the trip is $7,600, Broadus said.

That donation represents part of the proceeds from the firefighters' sponsorship of the upcoming Bentley Brothers' Circus Sept. 24-26 at Hagerstown Speedway.

"This is the seventh year for this vital fund-raising effort for our local benevolent activities like this bus trip," said Andy Hartman, president of the firefighters' union.

As for the bus trip to Dorney Park, area businesses, clubs, churches and individuals are being asked to come up with that last $800 so no child will be turned away.

A bank account at Hagerstown Trust Co. is set up in the name For Our Kids Sake, Broadus said. The account number is 14151-8. Contributions can be made at any Hagerstown Trust branch.

"This year we chose Dorney because it's closer and less expensive" than Paramount's Kings Dominion in Virginia, where youngsters were taken last year, Broadus said. Organizers this year have booked four buses to the Allentown, Pa., attraction.

The 200-acre amusement and water park features more than 100 rides and attractions.

To inquire about making donations, call Broadus at 301-739-2557.

Hartman said his organization's decision to give such a large sum to the bus trip was an effort to show how many different ways the firefighters support local groups - with their circus money.

"We fund two Hagerstown Community College scholarships, give $1,000 to each of the seven county high school bands each year and we put $1,000 toward the new press box at School Stadium," Hartman said.

And then there are sizable annual donations to Children's Village of Washington County, the American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy Foundation, Hospice, nursing homes and The Salvation Army.

Hartman said the firefighters also sponsor a Little League and a Pony League team each year and an Explorer Post.

By sponsoring the circus locally, the firefighters get to keep 20 percent of Bentley Brothers' proceeds from the three-day circus, Hartman said.
