Track to put slots in tent

July 29, 1999|By DAVE MCMILLION, Charles Town

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - About 500 new video lottery machines will be stored outside Charles Town Races under a tent while the track renovates an area inside for the games, but the track must first submit a plan to the county to explain how it intends to control stormwater runoff from the tent before it can be erected.

Although the tent is temporary, it is about 13,000 square-feet in size, according to Jefferson County Engineer John Laughland.

"It's pretty big," said Laughland.

Because there have been erosion problems on the northwest corner of the track's property, Laughland recommended the track submit a site plan to the Jefferson County Planning Commission detailing how it would control runoff.

It's not clear when the tent will be erected or how long it will be used, said Bill Bork Jr., director of marketing at Charles Town Races.

The machines will be kept under the tent while the track renovates an area that currently serves as a paddock to accommodate the games, Bork said.

A new paddock covering about 15,000 square-feet will be built on the east side of the track's grandstands.

The 500 additional video lottery games will give the track a total of 1,435 video lottery and slot machines.
