Photos of men suspected in robbery released

July 27, 1999

MAUGANSVILLE - Police have released security camera photographs of a July 21 robbery in progress at the Maugans Avenue branch of the Hagerstown Trust Co. in the hope it will help them identify the robbers.

One of the two men is 5 feet, 10 inches to 5 feet, 11 inches tall, with a thin build and several days of beard growth.

He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, dark sunglasses and white gloves.

The second man, who waited in the lobby, has a dark complexion and thin build. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt or jacket, sunglasses, a dark hat and gloves.

The robbery, the third at a Hagerstown Trust branch this year, and the 11th since September 1996, was the first at the Maugans Avenue branch.

The robbers entered the 18201 Maugans Ave. bank at 12:35 p.m. One of the men approached a teller and handed her a bag with a note attached demanding money.

No weapon was displayed or implied, Maryland State Police Trooper 1st Class Troy McDonough has said.

The men fled the bank with money, McDonough said.

Two other tellers were on duty at the time of the robbery but were not approached by the men, he said.

No customers were in the bank, he said.

McDonough said the two men left the bank in a gray Pontiac Grand Am and headed east on Maugans Avenue toward Interstate 81.

That car was found by a sheriff's deputy in the Washington Center parking lot at the intersection of Maugans and Pennsylvania avenues about one mile east of the bank.
