New assistant county attorney named

July 22, 1999

The Washington County Commissioners have hired a new assistant county attorney, John Martirano, 33, of Smithsburg.

Martirano, who has lived in Washington County for five years, has been the senior surety claims attorney for St. Paul Companies Inc. of Baltimore since August 1996. He previously worked as an associate for Steptoe & Johnson of Hagerstown from December 1993 to April 1996.

The County Commissioners decided Tuesday to hire Martirano after interviewing two candidates in closed session that same day, County Attorney Richard Douglas said. Martirano starts Aug. 16.

"John will make a good addition to the county attorney's office," Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said.

"Having the position filled will help deal with the ever increasing work load," Douglas said.

Martirano will replace Beth Evans, who was the first person to hold the position. She went on leave of absence March 30 and later resigned, effective June 30, Douglas said. Douglas said he couldn't disclose the reason for her leave of absence or her resignation because it was a personnel issue.

The job will let him work closer to home and do his part to help the county government, Martirano said.
