Residents can sign Kennedy condolence books

July 21, 1999

Like many people across the nation, Joan Geary felt compassion for the Kennedy family upon hearing of the deaths of John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife and sister-in-law in a Friday night plane crash.

Looking for an outlet for her grief, Geary, 74, called three local funeral directors, who agreed to offer condolence books for Washington County residents to sign in an attempt to bring comfort to the survivors.

The Hagerstown woman thought the Kennedys would appreciate knowing others share their sorrow, she said.

"I'm not even a Democrat. But this has nothing to do with politics, it has to do with compassion for the family," she said.

Condolence books can be signed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at the following funeral homes in Hagerstown:

* Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North.

* Frank L. and Scott M. Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd.

* Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home, 305 N. Potomac St.

Memorial cards will be available at the Gerald N. Minnich Funeral Home.

The condolence books will be forwarded to Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, a cousin of John F. Kennedy Jr., said Geary.
