Group to hold conference in county

Washington County Commissioners President Gregory I. Snook said Tuesday that the Maryland Association of Counties will hold its annual winter conference in Washington County.

The county hosted the conference about four years ago, he said. The annual summer conference is always in Ocean City, Md., but the location of the winter conference rotates, he said.

At least 100 people representing county governments around the state will come to the region for the conference, he said.

"It is not a big deal, but it is a tourism effort that will bring in lots of state people," Snook said.

Firm to provide insurance for Commuter buses

The Washington County Commissioners approved a $33,782 bid Tuesday for a company to provide insurance for County Commuter buses.

The contract went to low bidder Hartford Insurance Co. A current contract for $48,476 with the same company expires July 27.

Commissioner Bert Iseminger abstained for business reasons.

Commissioners to give airport grant

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved giving Hagerstown Regional Airport $7,574 to match a U.S. Department of Transportation grant to develop an airport layout plan.

The airport received the $151,500 grant in June. The state and county each are to pay 5 percent of the cost of the plan.

Work on the layout plan will include analyzing whether a runway should be extended, Airport Manager Carolyn S. Motz said. The total cost of extending the 5,450-foot runway to 7,000 feet has been estimated at $25 million to $40 million because the extended runway would cross U.S. 11.

The airport's current layout plan was developed in March 1988 and was informally modified each time changes were made, Motz said.

The plan is an overview of the airport's present state and an analysis of how it will look in the future, she said. She said she does not think the plan can be completed before February 2000.
