Ames evacuated briefly

The Ames department store on Dual Highway was evacuated for about 15 minutes Friday afternoon because of an odor of smoke.

Hagerstown Fire Department Battalion Capt. Randy Myers said firefighters quickly discovered the cause: a faulty motor on the air conditioning blower unit. Myers said firefighters shut the system off and the store contacted repairmen.

Myers said the incident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. He said shoppers were back inside within about 15 minutes.

"They were evacuated for the simple fact that they didn't know what it was," he said.
