W.Va. man injured in I-70 crash

July 12, 1999

FREDERICK, Md. - A West Virginia man was hospitalized after he lost control of his dump truck on Interstate 70 in Frederick County Monday morning, according to State Police in Frederick.

Phillip Owen Mechem, 58, of Great Cacapon, W.Va., was driving eastbound on I-70 near Mount Phillip Road when the 1987 Mack dump truck he was driving drifted off the road and hit a guardrail at 9:27 a.m., police said.

The truck continued into a wooded area and struck some large pine trees.

Rescue personnel worked for 45 minutes to free Mechem from the truck and a section of I-70 was closed for an hour, police said.

Mechem was flown to Washington County Hospital by a Maryland State Police helicopter. He was listed in fair condition Monday evening.
