Mail Call

July 05, 1999

Editor's note - Please be as brief as possible when calling Mail Call, The Daily Mail's reader call-in line.

Mail Call is not staffed on weekends or holidays so it is best to call Mail Call during the week. The Mail Call number is 301-791-6236.

You are welcome to leave a recorded message on any subject, but some calls will be screened out.

Here are some of the calls we have received lately:

"I bet the ones that want the stadium so bad don't even go to the games. Why don't you people go past the stadium when there is a game going on and see for yourself how many vacant seats there are? Even with a new stadium, that is not going to bring in the people."

"This is for the person who is worried about the older people having to make a choice between food or medicine. If they didn't go to Atlantic City or Charles Town so much, you wouldn't have to worry about what to choose from."

"I was reading where they are leveling off the grounds out at the Fairgrounds. Why wouldn't that be a good place for the new stadium? The grandstand is already there and they have a lot of parking places."

"I am calling in about someone looking for snowball stands in Hagerstown. There is one on Mitchell Avenue and it is open from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Cheap prices, but good snowballs."

"I think a big pity party is in order for the residents of the Mt. Aetna Road area who are complaining about the development of townhouses out there. The residents in the nearby community are complaining because they can't get out onto Mt. Aetna Road and Robinwood Drive. Big deal. The residents of Northern Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue who attempt to access their routes have had troubles for years. And even if you live in Fountain Head, getting onto Pennsylvania Avenue is no easy task. Welcome to Washington County, the townhouses are coming, big deal."

"There is a snowball stand on Mitchell Avenue. My kids and I go there every night."

"The city should re-evaluate the current road situation on Maugans Avenue before they build a Hampton Inn. This road is a nightmare during the morning and evening rush hour."

"It is July 1 and I received my tax bills right on time as usual, but of course with an increase. Wouldn't it be nice if local government delivered services so prompt. Like today, I had to call the city and remind them to come and pick up my papers that they forgot to come and get. Also, I know that it has been at least six weeks since I saw a street sweeper on my street."

"The employees at Redland Brick ought to be ashamed of themselves. They should go back to work."

"I wanted to wish Madonna a happy 20th birthday. We love you and you are a great person. Love, Mom, Clayton and Steve."

"I read in the paper about somebody wanting to know where there was a snowball stand. There is one across from South High on Sharpsburg Pike."

"If you lost a watch at Weiss in the Kmart lot on July 1, call in to Mail Call and leave your number and I will get back with you and you can just grab it."

"I would like to say great job to Engine 2 for raising the money for their engine and other engine companies. You have a great bunch of guys in Engine 2, officers as well as volunteers. To the drivers, you do a great job. This goes out to all the volunteer firefighters."

"This is about the ladies' purse that was found at Pangborn Park and was taken to the guard booth. Why wasn't it taken to the police station?"

"I want to congratulate the seven and eight year old All-Star team from Sharpsburg who participated in the Pen Mar Tournament in Franklin County, Pa. They came up from the loser's bracket to win second place. They did a very good job. To all the boys, I congratulate you. They had the only triple play they had ever seen from youngsters in that league. Once again, I congratulate you boys. Way to go, Seth."
