Woman hurt in U.S. 40 wreck

BOONSBORO - A Boonsboro woman was injured in a four-car accident involving a Washington County Sheriff's Department cruiser that had stopped a car on U.S. 40 at Ruble Road Monday afternoon, police said.

Deputy David Thomas Izat had stopped a car on the shoulder of the westbound lane of U.S. 40 at 12:37 p.m.

A 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme driven by Linda Jane Crabtree, 49, of 21425 Ruble Road in Boonsboro, was slowing down in the eastbound lane of U.S. 40 to make a left turn onto Ruble Road, according to Washington County Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Tom Newton.

A 1998 Ford Escort driven by Martha Anne Wolfe, 50, of 9602 Dublin Road in Walkersville, Md., struck Crabtree's car from the rear. The impact pushed Crabtree's car into the westbound lane and into the path of an eastbound 1997 Plymouth Neon driven by Stacey Marie Sewell, 24, of Summit Avenue in Hagerstown, Newton said.

Sewell's car collided with Crabtree's car and then traveled off the road onto the shoulder and hit the deputy's 1998 Ford Crown Victoria.

Izat was seated in the cruiser when it was struck.

Crabtree was taken to Washington County Hospital and released later in the afternoon, according to a supervisor.

Wolfe was cited for failure to control her car's speed to avoid a collision, police said.
