Roundup-Spreng wins rain-shortened junior tourney

June 29, 1999

Josh Spreng was 5 under par through 14 holes when rain ended the second Tri-State Junior Golf Association tournament of the year at Fountain Head Country Club on Monday.

Spreng was named the winner of the 16-18 division, finishing ahead of Steve Caron (1 over par) and Brad Shockey (4 over).

Tom Gift, Chris Breed and Ryan Moul were tied at 5 over in the 14-15 division, with Gift winning on a match of cards.

Seth Moul (6 over) won the 12-13 division for the second straight week. Alex Peck (13 over) was second, followed by Mike McCormack (14 over).


The tournament, sponsored by Allegheny Power and sanctioned by the Dick Kelly Memorial Foundation, drew 89 players. The next tournament will be at Black Rock Golf Course on July 12.


American Little League

Eagles 5, Thompson Concrete 3: Jesse Gutekunst homered, while Jon Hauser and Mike Mumma added two hits to lead Eagles. Will King went 3-for-3 to lead Thompson Concrete.

Hagerstown Colt Legue

Barton 4, Elks 2: Greg Dowler homered and Travis Brown, Josh Barnhart, and Nathan Strock each had two hits to lead Barton. David Line had two hits for Elks.

Henson 14, FOP 9: Josh Keyton and Rocky Dicola had three hits each to lead Henson. Gary Naile and Andrew Jerome added two hits. For FOP, Jake Ward and Matt Lynn had three hits.

Elks 6, Goodwill 5: P.J. Hiser and Tater Russ had two hits to lead Elks. For Goodwill, Mark Hutzell homered and Clint Burleson had three hits.

Federal Little League

Rotary 6, Kiwanis 5: Matt Ridenour, Brandon Brown and Mark Dattilio each had two hits, while Colby Thompson homered as Rotary won the league championship. Harrison Hammond had two hits to lead Kiwanis.

Washington Co. Girls Softball

Aladdin Trophy 13, First Union Bank 3: Marsha Moats had two hits and scored three runs to lead Aladdin Trophy. Ashley Palmer struck out six to earn the win. Lauren Reed had two hits to lead First Union Bank.

West End Little League

VFW 9, Stags 8: Tyler Duffey had two hits and Matt Murray homered as VFW claimed the league title. Kent Worthington had three hits, Orland Dean homered twice and D.J. Lucas had two hits for Stags.

Hagerstown PONY League

Eagles 8, Hagerstown Floors 7: Chris Miller and Kyle Robinson each had two hits, R.C. Myers had two RBIs, and T.J. Bowser, Matt Tedrick and Jeff Decker combined for 15 strikeouts for Eagles. Jason Sellers had a three-run homer and Matt Rouse had a two-run double for Hagerstown Floors.

FOP 7, Troopers 6: Ben Jordan struck out nine and had two hits for FOP. Derrick St. Clair had two hits and two RBIs for the winners. Craig Henson hit a three-run homer for Troopers.

Pen Mar 7-8 All-Stars

Sharpsburg 4, Greencastle 3: Seth Poffenberger, Jacob Pendergraft and A.J. Jamison combined for 11 strikeouts to lead Sharpsburg.


Hub City/Pinesburg Softball

Pick's Place 22, Craig's Paving 11: Bill Bakner had five hits, while Mick Byers, Curty Myers, Glenn Himes and Alan Harsh had four hits each to lead Pick's Place.

Firestone 23, Ernst Market 21: Dave Ecton went 6-for-6 and homered to lead Firestone. Dickie Dayhoff, Travis Twigg, Mike Leigh, Greg Bowman and Tim Lowery each homered. Steve Gordon homered for Ernst Market.

Designs Unlimited 29, Yankees 19: Scott Slocumb hit three home runs, while Eric Andrews had six hits for Designs Unlimited. William Markley and Scott Holder each had five hits and Wayne Shank added a homer.

Hagerstown Billiards and Cafe/Adam's Pizza 22, Osborne 9: Scott Remsburg hit two home runs to lead Hagerstown Billiards and Cafe/Adam's Pizza to victory. Mike Green, Donnie Blickenstaff, Allan Margent and Mike Malloy all added three hits. Scott Osborne had two hits, including a home run, for Osborne.

Lenox 24, Rapid Lube 19: Jack Vincent and Dave Barnes each had four hits, while Rodney Heller and Darrell Bingaman had three hits each for Lenox. Barnes, Mike Ward and Jack Vincent homered.

Hag. Area Church Softball

Christ Reformed/St. James 14, Nazarene 0: Adam Shank had three hits and Lloyd Kelly homered for Christ Reformed. Angie Brown had two hits for Nazarene.

St. Marks Lutheran 15, Hagerstown Church of the Brethren 4: John Bryan and Brian Delosier had four hits for St. Marks. Howard Metger homered and Dale Younker had four hits, including a homer.

New Life 15, Gateway 14: Steve Pryor had five hits, including a homer, to lead New Life. Larry Myers had four hits and Bill Childers added three hits.

Marantha/Virginia Ave. Church of God 17, Bethel 0: Fred Younker had three hits, including a homer, to lead Maranatha. John Kennedy, Ray Scadden and Cliff Miles also had three hits.

Halfway Morning Softball

Bud Light 25, Hagerstown Custody 12: Buddy Sommerville went 4-for-4 with a home run and Todd Ricker hit three home runs to lead Bud Light. Dave Foltz, Darren Stottlemyer, Jeff Beatty and Harry Rinehart all had three hits for Bud Light.
