WILLIAMSPORT - A man remained hospitalized in critical condition Monday after being burned in an explosion Sunday at a paper manufacturing plant, according to a hospital supervisor with Bayview/Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Monteell L. Friend, 30, was burned when a boiler exploded at the Maryland Paper plant at 16151 Elliott Parkway in Williamsport, state fire officials said.

Another employee, Terry Hovermale, 37, was burned on his legs. He was treated at Washington County Hospital and released.

An odor of smoke was coming from the boiler room of Maryland Paper before the accident, according to Deputy State Fire Marshal Ted Meminger. As the two men approached, the boiler exploded at about 5:06 p.m.

The blast caused $300,000 in damages, fire officials said.
