Union workers to vote on contract

June 28, 1999

Union workers at St. Lawrence Cement will vote Wednesday on a tentative contract reached during negotiations last week, said Stephen Heagy, union president of the Paper Allied-Industrial Chemical & Energy Union Local 2003.

Employees may cast their votes at noon and 4 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 70 E. Washington St. in Hagerstown.

Company officials and workers have disagreed about wages and insurance, he said.

The union recommends its members vote in favor of the agreement, said Jonathan Wolfel, international union representative for District 1.

Contract negotiations have gone on since February, he said.

Employees have been working without a contract since May 31. The company's 84 union workers rejected a company proposal on June 22. At that time a strike vote was approved by 95 percent of the employees.
