County Hall honors graduating athletes

The Washington County Sports Hall of Fame's Board of Directors has announced Sam Hess of Hancock Middle-Senior High School as the recipient of the second annual Aaron "Major" Steiner Scholarship Award.

The Hall of Fame also announced the first Harry R. Cunningham, Jr. Senior Male Athlete of the Year Award, the Sarah "Skip" Ward Senior Female Athlete of the Year Award and the Donald Stoner Coaches Award.

The winner of the Male Athlete of the Year is Keith Herbert of Boonsboro High School, Co-winners of the Female Athlete of the Year are Rachell Bachtell of Smithsburg High School and Meagan Verdeyen of North Hagerstown High School. The winner of the Coaches Award is J.D. Cardwell of Grace Academy.

Nominated for the Male Athlete of the Year award were Clint Crowell of Williamsport, Matt Mauriello of South Hagerstown, Matt Michael of Clear Spring, Steve Myers of Smithsburg, Branden Boger of St. James, Sam Hess of Hancock and Chris Pereschuk of North Hagerstown.

Those nominated for Female Athlete of the Year included Amy Spoonire of Williamsport, Ashley Herr of South High, Suzanne Ernst of Clear Spring, Allison Funkhouser of St. James, Amanda Bingamen of Hancock and Joanne Conner of Grace Academy.

The other coaches nominated were: Stan Stouffer of Williams-port, Jim Klein of Smithsburg, Keith Muller of St. James and Jim Hutson of Clear Spring.

The winners will be presented their plaques at the 13th Annual Washington County Sports Hall of Fame Banquet on July 17 at the Elks Lodge on Robinwood Drive.

The six new members to be inducted into the Hall of Fame that evening: Richard "Dickie" Dutrow (horse racing), Al Gardner (golf); Dick Guyton (baseball); Robert "Bo" Myers (coach); Eric Nemzek (soccer player/official); and Richard "Dick" Schultz (coach/athletic director).
