St. Lawrence and union reach tentative agreement

June 24, 1999

St. Lawrence Cement officials and representatives from the Paper Allied-Industrial Chemical & Energy Union Local 2003 have reached a tentative contract agreement, company officials said Thursday.

"A ratification vote is scheduled for next week," said Gary Batey, general manager of the cement company.

The tentative agreement was hammered out during negotiations Wednesday at the Four Points Hotel on Hagerstown's Dual Highway.

Employees have been working without a contract since May 31, according to Jonathan Wolfel, international union representative for District 1.

The company's 84 union workers unanimously rejected a company proposal Tuesday, he said. At that time, a strike vote was approved by 95 percent of the workers.
