Three children were injured after a driver lost control of his car on westbound Interstate 70 west of Bower Avenue Wednesday afternoon.

A 4-year-old was in critical condition at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D. C., Wednesday evening, Maryland State Police said.

Two other children were taken to Washington County Hospital with minor injuries, police said.

The names of the victims were not released.

Police said Michael E. Wynn, 31, of Jacksonville, N.C., was driving in the right lane of I-70 at 11:45 a.m.

As he was passing a slower moving tractor-trailer in the left lane, the rig began to move into his lane.

Wynn swerved onto the grassy median to avoid the tractor-trailer and lost control of his 1996 Nissan, which crossed both westbound lanes and hit the guardrail on the right shoulder, police said.

The car then went into the median and overturned and then slid across both lanes of I-70, coming to rest against a guardrail.
