Council OKs 3 measures for home program

June 23, 1999

Hagerstown City Councilman J. Wallace McClure voted against two of three measures related to the city's Single Family Homeownership Program on Tuesday.

Despite McClure's objections, all three measures were approved, and council is expected to take a final vote on July 27.

McClure said that he voted against the acquisition and rehabilitation of a property at 725-727 Washington Ave. and against authorizing the sale of a property at 637-639 W. Washington St., because the properties do not have off-street parking.

The Washington Avenue property was heavily damaged in a fire, and McClure said he thought the building might be so costly to rehabilitate that council should consider demolishing it.

McClure asked that a decision on whether to buy and rehabilitate the Washington Avenue property be postponed so that council members could inspect the property.

Councilwoman Susan Saum-Wicklein said that the council members all had ample time to go and see the property during the previous weeks.

McClure's motion to postpone a vote on the property was defeated.

The council then approved the purchase and rehabilitation of the property by a 3-1 vote.

With another 3-1 vote, the council authorized the sale of the property at 637-639 W. Washington St.

Meanwhile, the sale of 809 Washington Ave. to Emma J. Miller for $57,000 was approved by a 4-0 council vote.
