If you go to Antietam

June 21, 1999

To Antietam National Battlefield from Hagerstown: Take Md. 65 south 12 miles. The battlefield will be on the left, less than one mile north of Sharpsburg.

-Costs: Park entrance: $2 per individual, $4 per family. Tape-recorded field guide: $5 to rent, $6.95 to buy.

Park ranger-guided tours are free and can be taken without reservations, but it's best to schedule them about a week in advance. For larger groups (like a busload), there are private companies that provide tours. Both can be contacted through the Antietam Visitor Center at 301432-5124.

If you are interested in military strategy, check out the long film (every day at noon). If you want a backdrop of the war and some presidential history, the short film is better.

If you ever wondered if your ancestors fought in the Civil War, or what side they were on, "The Civil War Explorer" in the museum is a novel way to research that information on computer.
