June 18, 1999|By LARRY YANOS

The Washington County Sports Hall of Fame will name Mount St. Mary's basketball coach Jim Phelan an honorary member when it holds its annual banquet July 17 at Elks Lodge No. 378 in Hagerstown.

This past season, Phelan became only the fourth coach in college basketball history to win 800 games. He reached the milestone when Mount St. Mary's defeated Central Connecticut State to win the Northeast Conference Tournament and earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. He is 800-442 in 45 years at the Mount.

Earlier this month, Phelan was again nominated for the fourth time for induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

He is one of 13 people nominated. Nominees must receive 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for induction.

The names of the new inductees will be announced Monday.

* The highlight of the evening will be the induction of six new Washington County Sports Hall of Fame members.

The list incudes Richard Dutrow, Al Gardner, Dick Guyton, Robert Myers, Eric Nemzek and Richard Schultz.

Hall of Fame banquet tickets are $12.50 each and are available by calling Tom Palamar at 301-733-7251, or Frank Hamburg at 301-432-6565.
